The average life expectancy of a new washing machine is 11 years. Consumer Reports recommends replacing any appliance that’s more than eight years old unless it’s a high-end model and has a particular appeal to you. Others suggest replacing any top-loading washer manufactured in 1999 or earlier.
Too often people don’t want to take the time or money to consider repair and would simply rather replace their appliance. But in reality buying a newer washing machine doesn’t necessarily mean that you aren’t going to have problems. If the machine can be fixed then it’s a great idea to do so.
This is a very involved repair and will require disassembling most of the washer. However the problem is going to get worse very quickly and so either the drum and bearing will need to be replaced or the washing machine. If the washer is making a loud noise the tub bearing might need to be replaced
If your washing machine is not perfectly level with all four legs touching the floor it can bang and rock back and forth. This isn’t good for the machine and may damage walls and floors and anything else near the machine. Severe vibrations are a leading cause of future leaks and mechanical problems.
To perform the Master Reset carefully unplug the washing machine from the power outlet and leave it unplugged for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes plug your washer back in and see if it now works. If your washer has not reset itself then you will require a washing machine engineer to take a look at it for you.
1. Hoses – May be leaking in washer or on wall water tap causing a back leak.
2. Drain Pump – May be clogged or a hose loose causing a bottom leak.
3. Water Inlet Valve – May be faulty loose or clogged therefore causing a leak from back/bottom.
A clog in the drain hose leading from the washing machine to the drain standpipe. Material obstructing the water pump filter or impellers. Ot it could be a mechanical failure of the water pump.
If your washer fills with water but doesn’t agitate the problem is likely to be a broken belt or a problem with the motor.
You can check the washing machine’s spin cycle. If this works the motor is operating and the belt is not broken. If the spin cycle doesn’t work the belt may be loose or broken.
Your washer may have a clogged drain hose or the pump may be broken. It may even be something as simple as the hose being jammed. The washer pump forces water from the bottom of the machine into the drain hose.
A washer that leaks only during the spin cycle often has a leak in the main drain hose.
Hot and cold water fill hoses – Check the hot and cold water hoses from the household plumbing. If either hose is leaking tighten it or replace it as appropriate.
